Design

The BIA Design School was established in 1998, the first licensing of programs took place in 1999, and received his name in 2007.
Studio programs are implemented in accordance with amendments to the Law on Education, which entered on January 1, 2019, regarding languages ​​of study in Riga bilingually in the daytime (full time), evening and distance (part time) streams.
BSA DS programs are taught by specialists with rich practical experience from Latvia and other countries.

Description of the profession

We create the future!

  • A professional in the field of design knows how to plan and organize his work and the work of related specialists using modern advanced technologies,
  • he can develop a project and visualization of an object or process in a digital format;
  • He knows how to develop, process, stylize and radically change a static graphic image and 3D object (in printing, in modeling, in a virtual and material environment and in advertising), as well as a dynamic graphic image (video, animation), prepare the technical documentation necessary for the implementation of the project .
  • In practice, he is able to professionally formulate a work task and realize the figurative and artistic design of the project using the capabilities of a wide range of modern technologies. He knows how to use his qualifications in design work in various fields: in product, construction, the information business, advertising and printing, virtual design, in the creative industries – fashion, entertainment and art, etc.

Special factors characterizing the working environment:
Organizational – designers work both individually and in groups; use traditional, industrial, post–industrial and virtual technologies. In groups, they collaborate with specialists in related professions, and can also lead groups and integrate into various business schemes from classic industrial to creative industries and freelance. Ability to work closely with the client and understanding the needs of the target audithorium. The designer creates an artificial environment (subject and virtual), evaluating the impact of its aesthetic, functional and technological qualities and components on a person, as well as ethnic, cultural and historical features in the context of the situation in the pan–European cultural space.

Special requirements when performing work tasks: creative thinking in the use of knowledge acquired in the studio process, the ability to intuitively find the correct solutions to problems.

During his work at the BIA Design School, innovative studio programs were created to master a wide range of design areas, including the user interface (UI / UX) and simulate situations and use cases in virtual and material (including 3D) environments.
The acquired skills make it easy to integrate into complex projects related to the visualization of complex 3D objects of an architectural or industrial nature, graphic, animation / video and simulation processes, usage scenarios in a virtual environment, for example: to work in a team where one specialist develops the character of heroes, the other – character movements and dynamics, the third – the environment, camera angles and situations, the fourth – visualization of the entire environment and a specific scene with full detail, light, sounds, sequentially etc.

Content and specifics of the curriculum

Within the framework of the program, students study the fundamental disciplines of the general humanitarian direction: history, psychology, the basics of visual communication, professional language, copyright.
The disciplines provide a good basic training in the field of art and design. Study included painting, drawing, composition, typography, color, computer graphics and other educational subjects. In the learning process, students mainly work on the computer in various graphic editors popular on the labor market (vector, raster, animation, 3D, etc.).
The educational process includes professional practices, including with financing from EU funds, during which the student consolidates the knowledge gained and acquires skills for their practical application. Quality is guaranteed by an accredited study program, a dynamically and rationally developing material and technical base and highly qualified teaching staff with extensive experience in the field of design. The staff who started the creation of BIA Design School work today too.

Introductory tests

Applicants undergo pretesting and interviews. Applicants for the program pass a computer test and an entrance examination in the amount of a secondary school of cultural history.

Preparatory department

Preparatory courses are held for all comers, which provide a good basis for studying at BIA DS. Here you can get knowledge and skills on the basics of drawing, painting, computer graphics and composition, as well as a discount on training for admission to BSA DS.

Many graduates have achieved significant successes and are known not only in Latvia, but also far beyond its borders.
