Latvia is a multi-confessional country. Reformation in Latvia and Riga began already in 1521 and before World War 2 the Protestant Lutheran church was seen as a dominant church in Latvia.
Historically three Christian confessions have been established in Latvia:
Lutheran – the largest one community mainly in Western and Central Latvia (www.lelb.lv – information available in Latvian and English)
Catholic – the prime religion in Eastern Latvia (www.katolis.lv)
Russian Orthodox (www.pravoslavie.lv)
Old Believers – one of the largest communities in Europe, mainly in Eastern Latvia.
Largest non-Christian faiths are Jewish and Muslim.
The Muslim congregations have been registered in Riga and Ventspils.
