Latvia is inhabited by approximately 2 million people from which approximately 63% are Latvians Latvians and 24,2% – Russians, Belarusians, Ukrainians, Poles, Lithuanians, Jews and other nationalities.
Language
Latvian is the sole official state language of Latvia. Latvian language belongs to the Baltic group of the Indo-European languages and has the most similarities to Lithuanian. All the public signs in Latvia are Latvian.
There are some other rather popular languages spoken by population in Latvia: Russian, English and German.
There are four additional minority languages: Belarusian, Ukrainian, Lithuanian and Polish. However, their use is mostly limited as well as use of Latgalian, Livonian and Yiddish languages.
